About Us

The Marmara Project began as a conversation between two friends—an idea sparked by a simple but powerful realization: most people couldn’t point to the Marmara Sea on a map.

We couldn’t stop thinking about it.

This sea once stood at the crossroads of empires and discovery. It was the beating heart of the world—home to scholars, seafarers, innovators—and yet, somewhere along the way, it faded from global consciousness. That silence is what moved us.

In August 2022, we started speaking up—raising awareness, hosting beach cleanups, talking to locals in Istanbul and Bursa, and slowly building a community that cared. By early 2023, we weren’t just a social media page anymore. We became a grassroots movement.

And the world started listening.

From our first cleanups to presenting at global stages like MARUF, COP, National Geographic, and events as far as Amsterdam, we brought the name “Marmara” back into the global conversation—one voice, one post, one ripple at a time.

“The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” ~ Robert Swan

Our Mission

To put the Marmara Sea back on the map.

We know it was never truly erased—but when a sea as vital and historic as Marmara becomes forgotten, its ecosystems suffer.

So we’re here to remind the world that the Marmara Sea exists—and that it matters. We're here to amplify its voice and protect the life within it.

Our Vision

To restore the Marmara Sea to balance.

We imagine a Marmara free from plastic pollution, resilient in the face of climate change, and thriving with marine life once again.

We want to see an end to the recurring mucilage crisis—and to empower citizens, not just scientists, to be part of the solution.

Meet Our Team

We are based in Türkiye and operate locally in Istanbul and Bursa, as well as internationally in Canada and the USA.
